Thar coal projects are poisoning all forms of life in Tharparkar region. Tharparkar’s local communities demand that government should halt and minimise the environmental and econimic devastation wrought on local ecoligies by coal mining and coal-based power generation. The people demanded that coal companies and government must rectify the destruction of underground water and environment in Tharparkar. The demands were made by local communities who formed a life chain around waste-water disposal plant in Goranro village. Human communities, animals, birds and trees affected by poisonous waste-water of coal plants were also made part of this life chain. Environmental and human rights activists, journalists, artists, poets and writers participated and in the life chain in solidarity with communities violated by coal. Organized under the name of Jeewanr Saanjh Rajounri, the participating communities stressed that coal companies and government must evaluate environmental, economic and health related losses suffered by local communities due to poisoned waters from coal plants and coal mining and strengthen renewable energy projects. The people demanded provision of clean drinking water and safeguard the land rights of Thari people especially the Gaucher (grazing) land. They said that dams of poisonous water from coal mines and power plants should be shifted away from human settlements and concrete lined dams should be built for the purpose according to international best practices. The government, communities emphasised, must take necessary legal and policy measures to protect Tharparkar’s environment from coal-led devastation.
