Karachi Launches Pakistan’s First Large-Scale Public Air

Karachi, Pakistan — 16 May 2026:

Climate Action Center, with the support of Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, has officially launched Karachi’s city-wide Air Quality Display Initiative — the first initiative of its kind in Pakistan aimed at making air quality information publicly accessible on a large scale.

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab inaugurated 100+ Air Quality Displays installed across Karachi, positioning the city among leading global cities providing air quality information to citizens through outdoor public screens.

The initiative uses a simple color-coded system that enables citizens to instantly understand air pollution levels and take necessary health precautions accordingly.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab said:

“We are working towards environmentally friendly interventions for Karachi and encouraging private sector companies and international organizations through CSR contributions to support these efforts. The goal is to reinvest resources into sustainable projects and greenery for the city.

Air pollution is a serious issue, and according to available data, nearly 60% of Karachi’s air pollution comes from vehicles, followed by the power sector and industry. During winter months, air quality worsens significantly due to weather conditions and reduced air movement.

This is why initiatives like Karachi’s Air Quality Displays are important — so citizens can become aware of the air they are breathing and take precautions accordingly.

Environmental challenges affect everyone equally. The air we breathe is the same for all of us, regardless of position or background. We must move beyond politics and work together as a city to address these issues and build a healthier future for Karachi.”

This landmark initiative is a collaborative effort between the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Climate Action Center, reflecting a shared commitment toward environmental awareness, public health, and climate resilience in Karachi.

The launch event was attended by representatives from government, civil society, environmental organizations, and members of the media fraternity.
